The Rich History of Wine in Kelowna
How the Okanagan Became Canada’s Wine Capital
When most people think of world-class wine, their minds often drift to the rolling hills of Tuscany or the valleys of Napa. But right here in Kelowna, nestled along the shores of Okanagan Lake, lies one of North America’s most remarkable and fast-growing wine regions.
The story of wine in Kelowna is not just about grapes—it’s about passion, resilience, and transformation. Over a century ago, settlers
recognized that the Okanagan’s dry climate, long summer days, and cool nights made it an ideal environment for fruit cultivation. Before long, grapes began replacing apples, and a new chapter for British Columbia agriculture was born.
Early Beginnings: The First Vineyards
A Valley Rooted in Vines
The first official vineyard in the Okanagan was planted in 1859 by Father Pandosy, a French Catholic priest who founded the Okanagan Mission. While his small crop was used mostly for sacramental wine, it set the stage for what would become a thriving local industry.
By the 1920s, a few pioneering families—such as the Casorsos and Capozzis—saw potential beyond the mission’s humble roots. They began cultivating grapes for commercial use, producing rustic table wines from hybrid varieties that could survive the region’s cold winters.
The Rise of Calona Wines: Kelowna’s First Winery
In 1932, Calona Wines opened in downtown Kelowna, marking a turning point in local wine production. It became the first full-scale
commercial winery in British Columbia and
remains one of the oldest in Canada.
In its early years, Calona produced simple
fortified wines, but as viticulture advanced and new European grape varieties were
introduced, Kelowna’s vintners began
experimenting with more refined styles. By the mid-20th century, Okanagan wines were beginning to earn a reputation across the country.
Reinvention in the 1980s: The Birth of a Premium Wine Region
The 1980s were a pivotal era for the Okanagan wine industry. When the Canada–U.S. Free Trade Agreement took effect in 1989, local
producers suddenly faced competition from established American wineries. Instead of folding, Kelowna’s winemakers adapted—uprooting thousands of acres of hybrid vines and replanting with premium Vitis vinifera varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Noir.
This courageous shift transformed the valley from a bulk wine producer to a boutique, quality-driven wine region. The Okanagan’s unique
terroir—diverse soils, arid microclimates, and lake-moderated temperatures—proved perfect for growing grapes with distinctive character.
